Atlanta restaurants

Well i have posted reviews on all the restaurants where i ate last week and some i ate at over the past few weeks. It would be impossible to go back and review all the places i have eaten at since February, so i will just go from here.

I wanted to post the DC restaurants on here because some of them were so good... and posting remarks about places I travel in addition to Atlanta restaurants was one of the purposes of this blog.

So, from here on out I will do better about keeping up with posting restaurant and food reviews as soon as possible after my dining experience.

Happy Eating.

The Standard- Atlanta

We went here last Thursday night thinking we would just drive right over and have a relaxing night out to complain about work. NOT, Traffic was horrible and The Standard was packed. So packed after we got arrived, there was actually a wait for a table... on a Thursday. No one seemed to know what was going on and why it was so packed. Around 8 pm it cleared out and the traffic was gone, thank goodness.

As far as the food goes, I was craving meat so i ordered a burger with blue cheese and bacon. It was so good i was ooohhhing and aahhhing as i was eating it. The fries were also cooked well and did not disappoint. I also saw the wings going by along with standard fries ( U fries for those of you familiar with the U Joint) and they looked great as well.

I also love the alcoholic version of Cherry Limeade they create at the bar. Like Sonic only with alcohol!!! The worst thing about The Standard is that people are allowed to smoke inside. So i left smelling like smoke, which is almost unheard of these days in GA.

If you like the U joint but got tired of the bad service, rancid ketchup and dogs everywhere come to the Standard. The service is good, the U fries and wings are the same... but better, the fries are good and there are no kids and dogs. Think U joint with better food, good service and no dogs licking your food.

Twains - again

We went there this past Friday and we able to score a great table on the semi-covered patio. Unlike last time we had a great waiter that was just attentive enough and did not seem to be flustered by the constant influx of people to our table.

Once before here i had a Greek plate that was very good. Since then their menu has changed, so i decided to go for the Mezza Plate. It comes with a great cucumber and yogurt salad that was so good i ate every last drop. It also comes with toasted pita, which is nice compared to some restaurants that serve it cold. The hummus was standard hummus, nothing special and the Moroccan eggplant was ugghhh, but i do not care for eggplant anyway.

I was wishing i would have ordered something more bar food like about half way through the meal, but the cucumber salad was worth it. A friend ordered onion rings which he was informed he could not get as a side... but after his disappointment he ordered an entire order. They were so good we were all eating off his plate even though he does not like to share.

Other friends had the Cuban sandwich and the Philly cheesesteak sandwich which they both said were good.

MF Sushi - Altanta

I went there for lunch this Friday which I always try and do anytime i have the day off and I can lunch intown. MF has the best sushi I have tried in Atlanta, along with a great location and good service.

I just pull right into the parking garage and either park for free or have my car valet parked for no fee (save the tip). A seat is always available at the sushi bar for lunch and the lunch specials are priced well and taste great as well.

Choose from several sushi options at lunch prices. I get 6 pieces of nigri that comes with your choice of a tuna roll, cucumber roll, or spicy tuna roll. There is also the inevitable California roll choice which i cannot understand why anyone would order. These options all come with miso soup and a small salad with a great ginger dressing. I am always eating the salad dressing to the very last bite.

While this is plenty of food, i also usually order another roll because i only get to eat year once every few months. I love to try the other rolls, but unfortunately they are not at lunch prices.

It might be a little pricey, even for lunch... but it is so worth it BUT beware you might not be able to eat grocery store sushi ever again.

Six Feet Under - Atlanta

A few of us went to Six Feet Under last Friday for our version of happy hour. Unfortunately for us this place was packed. Not at all the experience we had a few weeks ago. We were hoping for a seat on the rooftop patio, but it was full by 545, mostly due to a large group of drunk nursing school graduates (that you could hear downstairs by the way).

We only had to wait 15 minutes or so for a table and the service was fine until it came time to get the check. Oh, and the bathrooms were out of order for a period of time. Luckily the cleaners next door allowed patrons to use their ONE bathroom, but the restaurants bathroom was fixed before we left. Although it still stunk.

I ordered combo tacos again. Unfortunately they were not as good as the last time. They certainly did not disappoint, but i did not feel as if the fish and shrimp were seasoned as well. However, the rat tails were more crisp, and i thought better than the last time. The fried green tomatoes were consistent and just as good as they were the last time we ordered them. We also tried the buffalo oysters, which are nothing compared to the ones at Redfish in New Orleans, but i did not think they would be.

By the way they also have a great Blueberry Lemonade, an alcoholic version, from the bar.

As far as the service, i still do not understand why some waiters cannot see that a group of 6 people is typically going to need at least 3 separate checks if not more. Why are they surprised when they get 5 credit cards, and wouldn't be easier to split the check in the 1st place? It seems to me the tip would be better, because each person would be tipping separately and everyone would now their exact amount... therefore no one would shortchange the tip or the price. Our waiter was fine and on his way to a good tip before he mishandled the check.

first he messed up one of the cards and had to get the manager to void it. Then, he did not apply the coupons they had given us for the bathroom being out of order. When we asked for them back to use them on our next visits, he acted like that was out of the question. Then he did not seem to understand the concept of splitting the check among the 5 tabs. Wouldn't it have been easier to do this in the beginning? Clearly unless the party is one family, a table of six is going to have separate checks.

Twain's Decatur

We ate here a few months ago and had the worst waiter we have had in a long time. He asked us at least every 2 minutes if we were ready to order even though we told him we were waiting on other people to arrive. He did not seem to understand the concept of hanging out on a Friday night. After many mishaps by the waiter we determined that he had to have been high on something because his behavior was so abnormal. At one point I ordered a new drink and he actually asked me if i wanted it then or if i wanted to wait until i finished the other one. Umm, no i want it now, that is why i ordered it.

Anyway, the food... We ordered wings and nachos to snack on. The wings were good and i found myself eating more of those because the nachos were not that great. When will some restaurants realize that some cheeses just do not melt well or stay melted after you bring them to the table. There was not enough cheese (is there ever really enough:) ) and after a few minutes the cheese was cold and therefore not the ideal consistency. Sour cream, jalapenos, and salsa were extra so i felt like i was assembling my own nachos and paying extra for every piece. Save the nachos for an restaurant that puts melted cheese on top and it stays melted for more than a few minutes.

The food here is not what you would expect from a bar, which can be a good thing. It is not your typical bar food here, although you can get a burger, wings and almost any kind of sandwich you want. If you are coming here to get greasy bar food to soak up alcohol you are in the wrong place, except for the fries of course. The wings are baked and come with jerk seasoning instead of the typical buffalo variety. I was a skeptic at first, but now i am converted and might just like these more than buffalo wings.

They also have this great cream corn that is smoky, spicy and creamy all at the same time. Every time i order it the wait staff ask if i have had it before because it is not your typical cream corn. BUT that is a good thing. Think cream corn with more cream and chili powder. So good i get it every time i go now.

The pork chops are my friend's favorite and I know why. They are perfectly fried and come with great sides of grits and collards. If he is burnt out on the chops he'll order the catfish, which is just as good and never disappoints.

The hummus is also good. The burger is a typical burger.
The nachos do not have enough cheese or fixins' on them for me.
All in all, go here if you want good service (at a bar none the less) and good food that won't leave you feeling like you have to go to the gym on your way home.

Corner Pub - Decatur

We went here on a Sunday in April for an end of the weekend treat since i was out of town on Friday. Unbeknowest to us there was a gumbo cook off that day. Many people had their gumbo creations in crock pots and after the judges were finished we were allowed to sample. Thank goodness one version of gumbo had a warning that it contained peanut butter, or i would have died right then and there. Yes, i am allergic to peanuts... highly allergic. I would probably die if i ate a spoonful of peanut butter gumbo.

As an aside here i have to wonder why some people are intent on making changes to things that work. Gumbo works as is with flour, veggies and seafood or chicken. Why must someone make a version of gumbo with lamb and peanut butter. I would have to argue that is not gumbo at all. But i digress, this is precisely why those of us with food allergies have to be extra careful and why some of us die while eating out. I always watch for peanuts in places where you typically find peanuts like cookies, thai food and brownies... BUT GUMBO. Surely not. This reminds me of a story a few years ago where a boy died after he at chili that contained peanuts. Why oh Why must we mess with a good thing and add crazy ingredients. However i have to give kudos to the person that took the time to make a sign warning us of the peanut butter in the gumbo. (of all things) Ugghh!

Six Feet Under - Atlanta

This is a great restaurant/bar directly across the street from Oakland Cemetery. A friend of mine and I decided to go there one Friday night in April even though we expected it to be crowded. Much to our surprise when we arrived we got a spot in the coveted parking lot and the bar and restaurant were virtually empty. We did not chance the great rooftop patio due to the threat of rain, but still enjoyed our cemetery view from the bar.
We had great service and great conversation with the bartenders and other locals needing a Friday night cocktail.

We ordered the rat tails (jalapenos stuffed with shrimp and wrapped with bacon) and the fried green tomatoes for appetizers. The rat tails were great and prove to be a lower fat way to have those stuffed jalapenos we OD'd on in the 90's. The fried green tomatoes are pan fried in a light dusting of cornmeal and topped withe chopped tomatoes and a very tasty dill sauce. My only complaint is that there should be more than 3 rat tails per order. 4 or 6 please.

For dinner I ordered the combo tacos. Actually this is the only thing I have ever ordered here because it never disappoints. With this plate you get a fish, shrimp and calamari taco with homemade potato chips on the side. The fish and shrimp are grilled and are so tasty i crave them . Calamari is not one of my favorite dishes and personally i would prefer a 2 taco option, but the fixings on this taco are great and i tend to pick at those since the other 2 tacos and chips fill me up.

The homemade potato chips are sliced then and fried to perfection.
My friend ordered the shrimp and grits. They are served in one big bowl with huge pieces of asparagus placed on top. At first I thought these looked a little soupy, but when i tasted them they worked. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and the shrimp and grits were tasty as well.
Go here for great atmosphere and good seafood... if you can get it.
Beware parking is not great, but sometimes you luck out and get a spot in the lot.

Done with DC

Now that my DC posts are finished, i will try to keep up better with my weekly and/or daily eating. I hope to review restaurants when i eat there, even if i eat there on mulitple occasions. As we know any restaurant can be great one time and not so great the next.
REad on...

Lebanese Taverna - Washington DC

This restaurant was right across from our hotel and highly recommended. We went one day for lunch and tried to decide on items to order. The menu can be overwhelming at first because there were so many items to choose from. First you have to choose if you want to go the entree route or the small plates route. Unfortunately the wait staff was not much help and had to be flagged down several times.

There are few different variations of hummus to choose from, and I chose one with meat. The hummus was good, the meat was a little strange and I found myself picking around it. I order some typed of fried cheese that was certainly the stand out, but not enough to make a meal upon. A basket of bread was served with each order. It was great, but we ran out and had to flag a waiter down for more. Once we finally got it, we were almost finished and stated if we had the bread 10 minutes before the meal would have been better.
The food was good and I would go back. The service needed improving drastically. Next time perhaps I could get a server that could help navigate the menu and then the food would be as good as everyone was talking about.

Pizzeria Paradiso - Washington DC

I hopped on the Metro one weekday for a lunch away from the busy restaurants near our hotel. I had read about this place which researching the trip and hoped it would not disappoint. Typically when away on business I have a few great meals and more that are just OK. With a few meals in a row that were just OK I was hoping for something more.
This restaurant is a few steps away from the Metro, so it seemed like you had to be in the know to find the place. All the diners seemed to be locals that worked in the area. I took a spot at the bar and watched as the cooks prepared the fresh pizzas and salads.

Pizzeria Paradiso is Small restaurant with no more than 15 tables and 2 waitresses at lunch.
I had a panzanella salad and a pizza that was cooked right in front of me in the wood fired oven.
The panzanella had a non-traditional presentation, but was tasty, especially when topped with the perfectly green olive oil on each table and the bar.

The pizza was cooked perfectly, with a traditional thin crust and again was even better topped with the OO. Thank goodness for a great lunch experience that did not include a chain restaurant or one filled with colleagues from my meeting. A little off the beaten path, but worth it.

Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe - D.C.

I had read about this bookshop/cafe before I stumbled upon it in D.C. I first saw it on a busy weekend morning when there was a long wait and people were crammed in the bookstore waiting for a table. I chose to forgo the food and the shopping for the time being due to the madness in the store. A few days later I decided to try the place again. I got there just in time for the breakfast menu which stopped being served only minutes after i set down. I ordered an omelet as I had read that they were good. I was not impressed and thought the food and decor were sub-par. Two tables of people got up and left while I was there and I have to admit, i wanted to do the same.
When i left i wondered why i had wasted my money and wondered what all the hype was about.

Dupont Circle Farmers Market - D.C.

While this is not technically a restaurant you can certainly eat breakfast and lunch here while walking around and shopping. This is a great farmer's market that is easily accessible as it is right outside the Dupont Circle Metro stop. I had so much fun walking around and sampling the great cheeses, breads, apples and pastries. There were many items I could not buy because I staying in a hotel without a refrigerator, but I certainly had enough to fill me up for breakfast and lunch. The cheeses, apples and breads were great. I had a scone, among other treats, for breakfast and bought apples to snack on throughout the week.
Don't miss this treat if you are in town on a Saturday.

Smith & Wollensky's - D.C.

This is a chain restaurant that can be found in many large US cities that primarily serves steak and other items al a carte. I was having dinner with friends from MS who made the reservations. Personally I would have never chosen the place to eat, but the reservations were made. They had gotten into town a day earlier and were surprised with the wait time at the good and recommended restaurants.
On a Saturday night, there was no wait and most of the tables were empty. The decor and food were typical. The prices were outrageous. Three of us ordered steak for $30+ each and al a carte items were expensive as well. The food was just OK. All of our steaks were undercooked and my friend who ordered the chicken exclaimed that she could make chicken better (she does not cook). WE were not at all impressed, except with the bill that was over $300 for 4 adults.
Save your money and go to a locally owned DC restaurant, even if it means waiting for a table.

Lauriol Plaza - Washington DC

I also ate at this restaurant while in DC on business. I had seen it written up while researching restaurants before the trip and also heard several people talking about it as a place they HAD to go while it town.
This is a huge fun restaurant that does not disappoint. There are 3 floors, so beware of the margaritas if you are seated on the 3rd floor. The only bathrooms are on the 1st floor. We arrived early enough not to have to wait, but when we left there were patrons lining up in the bar. We almost stayed here because everyone looked to be having so much fun.
We had the tamales as an appetizer. They were good and the salsa was as well. There was so much to choose from on the main menu it took a while to decide what to order. I settled on the Camarones Brochette because I did not want the traditional dishes i can get anywhere. These were shrimp stuffed with cheese and jalapeno, wrapped in bacon and grilled.
My friends stuck to more traditional items like fajitas and enchiladas. All of our dishes were great and there was so much food. Normally items like rice and beans are just plate filler for me, but in this case the beans were great and i found myself wanting to eat more but was way to full.
All in all this was a great restaurant with great atmosphere. I would recommend it to anyone.

Oyamel - Washington D.C.

I ate at this restaurant while on a business trip to D.C. in February. I know I am behind on my postings, but I am trying to play catch up. Oyamel has great atmosphere, food and is fun for a small or large group.
To start we waited at the bar and had great margaritas and chips & salsa.
After a short wait our table was ready and we started on our feast. Apparently they are known for their table side guacamole. I do not care for guac, but my friend ordered some for herself. It was quite a presentation and most people in the restaurant we having it.
The dishes are primarily small plates, which I love because that means I get to try more food.
The stands out were the chilaquiles and a shrimp dish (I can't remember the name and it is not listed on the website). The chilaquiles are handmade tortilla chips covered in a great green sauce and cheeses, all baked to a golden brown. I love anything with cheese, and burnt cheese is one of my all time favorites. While this dish is considered a small plate, it is big and certainly enough for several people to share.
The shrimp dish contained about 6 shrimp which were perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. My friend and I were both full, but I insisted she try them and then she raved about them and finished the plate.
The tacos were OK. One of the tacos I could not finish because the other dishes were just better, I believe it was the chicken (Tinga Poblano). Another taco (the fish) I ordered was OK. They are served in cute little taco carriers that keep them upright so the fillings do not spill.
All in all this was a great restaurant which i would recommend and definitely go back to. And the menu on the website does not include all the dishes served at the restaurant.
Happy Eating.
